heart health awareness

In early February, Alpha Phi holds Heart Throb week to raise awareness and fundraise for women’s heart health. Throughout the week, Alpha Phi hosts chocolate strawberry deliveries, passes out heart health recipe cards, holds a CPR workshop, and promotes awareness for women’s heart disease, the number 2 killer of women in America. All proceeds from Heart Throb week goes to the Alpha Phi Foundation, a national nonprofit dedicated to the cause of women’s heart health research.

Community service

The Iota Sigma chapter is proud to be involved in multiple service events every semester. In the past sisters have picked up trash and helped beautify Schenley Park, sorted books at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, organized blood drives, written letters for families at Gwen’s Girls, and hosted birthdays for under-privileged children living in local shelters through Beverly’s Birthdays. Sisters are encouraged to complete five hours of community service each semester, but many of our sisters choose to go above and beyond this expectation and give back to the community by volunteering at local animal shelters, hospitals, after-school care centers, and much more. Our sisters also participate in Greek Day of Service each fall and 1000plus in the spring, large-scale community service events for the entire Carnegie Mellon community.

mac n phis

Mac N' Phis is Alpha Phi's new signature fall philanthropy event. Started in Fall 2016 and taking place in late October, Alpha Phi rents out a room in Carnegie Mellon's Cohon University Center to set up an all-you-can-eat mac n' cheese bar. Mac N' Phis consists of more than fifteen tins of mac n' cheese with all types of different pastas and a toppings bar with hot dogs, bacon, broccoli, and green onions. Mac N' Phis also has a photo station in the back with cute cheese-themed props for a break between bowls of mac n' cheese.

In its first year, Mac N' Phis was extremely well attended and we raised over $900 for the Alpha Phi Foundation. We can't wait to host the event again next fall!

Our event Alpha Phifa features a women and men’s six-on-six tournament and mini games. The event is held in October at the Intermural soccer field and the rain location is Wiegand. The cost is 35$ per team to play. All proceeds benefit the Alpha Phi Foundation which supports women’s heart health. You can find out more about our event at our facebook page or contact us at
